If you buy one of the more expensive kits, they come with an external housing for the DVD drive you remove, so you wont need a new Macbook Air DVD drive.

when you install a this do you need to mess with the jumper? My MBP wont initialise the drive in the optical bay caddy, but the drive works fine in a USB caddy. Any ideas what this could be?

Shouldnt need to mess with jumpers, no. Double all the cables, then check compatibility between the type of drive you put in and your model.
